Valentines Day

Valentines Day

Valentines day is a holiday where gifts are given to loved ones. This takes place on February 14 every year. This holiday is also known as St. Valentine’s Day. The festival has origins in the Roman Festival of Lupercalia which takes place in mid February. This festival used to celebrate the coming of spring. Pope Gelasius replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentines Day. It came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century. Many believe the name came from a priest a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. The legends suggests that the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter. Many also believe that St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, is what the holiday was named after. Valentines, started to appear in the 1500s, and by the late 1700 printed cards were being used. The first valentines in the United States  were printed in the mid-1800s.  Valentines commonly depict Cupid, the Roman god of love, along with hearts, traditionally the seat of emotion Some Traditional gifts include candy and flowers, particularly red roses which are a symbol of beauty and love. This holiday is popular and celebrated all over the world. In the Philippines, it is the most common wedding anniversary.
